Buenos Aires, Jan 5 (NA) – Former Planning Minister Julio De Vido has once again requested house arrest due to health issues and his age to continue serving his four-year prison sentence for the Once tragedy.
The intention of the head of the Planning portfolio during the Néstor Kirchner and Cristina Kirchner administrations is to leave the Ezeiza prison and continue his sentence at his farm in the Buenos Aires locality of Zárate.
Ten days ago, Federal Judge Ricardo Basílico rejected his request for house arrest, considering that he is fit to continue at unit 19 of Ezeiza, as his conditions can be monitored without any issues from there.
Now, De Vido's lawyers, Maximiliano Rusconi and Gabriel Palmeiro, have renewed their push for house arrest by appealing Basílico's ruling, as confirmed by the Argentine News Agency (NA).
The request will be analyzed by the Federal Court of Cassation for Criminal Appeals during the current judicial recess, as it pertains to a detention matter.
De Vido has been in custody since November 13 of last year when he presented himself at the Comodoro Py courts to begin serving his sentence, which the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation made final for the Once railway tragedy, which occurred on February 12, 2012, when a Sarmiento line train crashed upon failing to brake upon arriving at the terminal station, resulting in 51 fatalities.

The former official turned 76 in prison at Ezeiza and argues that his age and his diabetes problems are sufficient reason for the justice system to grant him house arrest.
«A period of more than a month has passed without any episode in the health of the accused having been verified that would make it necessary to transfer him to the Central Penitentiary Hospital or an external care facility, a circumstance that allows us to infer that, in his current accommodation, he is receiving the appropriate therapeutic care to maintain the stability of his clinical condition,» stated Judge Basílico two weeks ago.
